How a driveway gets paved

Four steps from gravel and mud to blacktop.

Most of what makes asphalt last happens before the paver shows up, and in the first year after.

1

Measure it and read the water

Length, width, grade, what is there now and where the rain goes. The written estimate lists each line.

2

Grade and build the base

Soft spots dug out, the lot shaped to shed water, then crushed stone spread and compacted.

3

Pave and roll

Hot mix laid to the right thickness, edges tapered and rolled tight before it cools.

4

Cure, then seal

Light traffic for the first days, then a first sealcoat once the asphalt has cured.

6 to 12months before the first sealcoat

New asphalt is still giving off its oils. Sealing it too early traps them and leaves a soft surface, so most new driveways get their first sealcoat 6 to 12 months after paving, then every 2 to 3 years. That one habit adds years to a mountain driveway.

Questions we get first

Straight answers, then a written estimate.

How much does an asphalt driveway cost in Asheville?

Most residential asphalt driveways in Western NC run $3,500 to $12,000, or about $4 to $8 per sq ft installed. Steep grades, long runs, culverts and a soft base push it toward the top. The full cost guide breaks it down.

How long does an asphalt driveway last?

Built on a compacted stone base and sealcoated every few years, an asphalt driveway commonly lasts 15 to 25 years. Water under the base and skipped maintenance are what cut that short in the mountains. How long asphalt lasts.

Tar and chip or asphalt: which should I pick?

Tar and chip costs less on long lanes and grips well on grades, but it is rougher and needs re-chipping sooner. Hot-mix asphalt is smoother, easier to plow and lasts longer. Tar and chip vs asphalt.

When should a new driveway be sealcoated?

Give fresh asphalt 6 to 12 months to cure before the first sealcoat, then reseal every 2 to 3 years. Sealing too early traps the oils and leaves a soft surface. When to sealcoat.

What is the best time of year to pave in the mountains?

Hot mix needs warm, dry weather to compact, so most mountain paving runs from spring through fall. Winter is the time to get the estimate and hold a spot on the schedule. The paving season, explained.

Do I need a permit to pave my driveway in NC?

Repaving an existing driveway usually does not. A new connection to a state-maintained road generally needs an NCDOT driveway permit, and city streets have their own rules. Driveway permits in NC.
